The real Milky Way contains between 200 and 400 billion stars. I’ve made a small tech demo where you can fly through a very, very small galaxy with only 100.000 stars.
It is based on an "archimedic spiral" algorithm and draws a defined number of "arms" and distributes stars around these arms while putting most of them in the middle. Combined with a real galaxy texture, the result is stunning.
